Government spokesperson told reporters on Monday that gunmen from the Red Tabara rebel group have killed nine people and injured others in an overnight attack.
The attack took place near western Burundi the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.
Red Tabara group has been fighting Burundi’s government from positions in Congo since 2015.
The Red Tabara in a post on X (formerly Twitter) has confirmed that it had attacked two Burundian military positions on Sunday night, they also took away weapons and ammunition.
Red Tabara said: “fighters launched 2 attacks on the night of February 25, 2024 against the military position at the Mpanda River & the Ndombolo position in Buringa”.
It added that “the fight will intensify until the terror of the CNDD-FDD regime against the population stops and inclusive negotiations are opened for lasting peace in our country”.

The rebel group said six soldiers were killed in the attack.
