MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a reduced grand prize of N100 million for the upcoming 2024 season of the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), down N20 million from last year’s N120 million prize.
The ninth edition of the show is set to kick off on Sunday, July 28, introducing significant changes to the format.
Busola Tejumola, executive head of content and West Africa channels at MultiChoice, revealed the details during a press briefing on Tuesday.
The show will air on all Africa Magic channels at 7 pm WAT, promising viewers 71 days of entertainment until the finale on October 6, 2024.
Despite the reduction in cash prize, the winner will still walk away with a substantial reward package. “Our grand prize this year is worth N100 million,” Tejumola stated, adding that the prize includes a brand new SUV in addition to the cash.
The decrease in prize money comes as a surprise, considering the show’s growing popularity. Last year’s all-stars season saw Ilebaye Odiniya claim the N120 million grand prize, setting a high bar for future contestants.
Auditions for the new season took place between March 27 and May 4, attracting hopefuls from across the country. The organizers have teased that this year’s edition will feature “double drama, relationships, and huge competition,” with new twists and unknown housemates ready to capture viewers’ attention.
“Expect shocking twists, explosive drama, and alliances that will keep you guessing,” the BBNaija team promised, building anticipation for what they describe as a season “for the books.”
As fans eagerly await the premiere, questions remain about how the reduced prize money will impact the show’s dynamics and contestant motivations. Regardless, BBNaija continues to be a cultural phenomenon in Nigeria, and this latest season is poised to dominate social media discussions throughout its run.
With its mix of entertainment, drama, and life-changing opportunities, Big Brother Naija 2024 is set to once again captivate audiences across the nation and beyond.
