Egypt U-23 team started their Olympic campaign with a disappointing goalless draw after being held by the Dominican Republic in a Group stage match on Wednesday.
In a surprising turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Egypt’s football team failed to impress in their opening match, settling for a goalless draw against Olympic debutants Dominican Republic.
The result leaves the Pharaohs in a precarious position in Group C, sitting second with just one point, while Spain leads after a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan.
Despite entering the match as favorites, Egypt struggled to assert dominance throughout the 90 minutes. The team’s lackluster performance was characterized by missed opportunities and a lack of cohesion, much to the disappointment of their supporters.
The Dominican Republic, relishing their first-ever Olympic football appearance, showed no signs of intimidation. They even had a goal disallowed in the 13th minute when Peter Gonzalez’s effort was ruled out due to a foul on Egyptian defender Hossam Abdel-Maguid.
Egypt’s attacking woes were evident as they squandered several clear-cut chances. Striker Ossama Faysal’s 19th-minute header sailed over the crossbar, while Ibrahim Adel and Mohamed Elneny both came close to breaking the deadlock before halftime. Elneny’s powerful long-range strike struck the post, summing up Egypt’s frustrating evening.
The second half mirrored the first, with Egypt creating but failing to capitalize on opportunities. Ahmed ‘Zizo’ Sayed’s header missed the target, and Omar Fayed couldn’t convert when presented with an open goal in the closing stages.
As the match progressed, the Dominican Republic appeared content to secure a point, making only tentative forays forward in the second half.
Egypt’s coach will have much to ponder ahead of their crucial match against Uzbekistan on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic will face group leaders Spain, buoyed by their unexpected result against the more fancied Egyptians.
This underwhelming start puts additional pressure on Egypt to perform in their remaining group matches if they hope to progress in the tournament.
For the Dominican Republic, securing a point in their Olympic debut provides a platform to build on as they continue their historic campaign.
Egypt are set to face Uzbekistan on Saturday, while the Dominican Republic will take on group leaders Spain on the same day.
