Egypt’s U-23 national team winger Ahmed ‘Zizo’ Sayed remains confident in his team’s chances to advance in the Paris 2024 Olympic football tournament, despite a goalless draw in their opening match against the Dominican Republic.
The young Pharaohs kicked off their Olympic campaign with a surprising 0-0 stalemate against the Dominican Republic in their Group C opener on Wednesday. This result places Egypt second in the group with one point, behind Spain who secured a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan.
Despite the initial setback, Zizo, one of the team’s senior players, expressed optimism in a post-match interview. “We still have two games ahead, and the road is long,” he stated, emphasizing the team’s remaining opportunities in the group stage.
The Zamalek star acknowledged the team’s disappointment but maintained a positive outlook. “We had hoped for a win but lacked belief in our ability to secure it,” Zizo admitted, adding, “Every Olympic match is challenging.”
Egypt’s next crucial match is against Uzbekistan on Saturday, while group leaders Spain face the Dominican Republic on the same day. These upcoming fixtures will be pivotal in determining the young Pharaohs’ fate in the tournament.
Zizo, alongside former Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny, brings valuable experience to the U-23 squad. Their leadership will be crucial as Egypt aims to bounce back and secure a spot in the next round of the Olympic football tournament.
As the competition unfolds, all eyes will be on Egypt to see if they can live up to Zizo’s optimism and turn their Olympic campaign around in the remaining group stage matches.
