The Nigerian national team has intensified campaign to rally fan support ahead of their blockbuster Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against South Africa on Wednesday.
Dubbed “Let’s do it again”, the Super Eagles’ social media drive aims to whip up backing from Nigerians as the team seeks to book a place in the AFCON final for the first time since 2013.
A promotional video posted across their official accounts on Monday February 5, comes with a caption “Just keep supporting, they will deliver” as voiceovers from players like Alex Iwobi urging fans to get their T shirts from the website to support the team for the game.
The semi-final represents a chance for Nigeria to defeat South Africa again on the AFCON stage, just like they did in the 2000 tournament. On that occasion, goals from Tijani Babangida and Julius Aghahowa earned the Super Eagles a 2-0 win en route to the final.
Now Nigeria is hoping for a similar result in Wednesday’s last four clash as they look to set up an AFCON title decider against hosts Ivory Coast or DRC Congo.
The “Let’s do it again” campaign was launched by the NFA as a merchandise store for Nigerians to purchase Super Eagles gear and show their support before and during the AFCON. It aims to ensure fans play their part in cheering the Super Eagles towards another win over their rivals by buying and wearing Nigeria colors and apparel.
With a formidable attack led by Victor Osimhen, Nigeria will be strong favorites. But South Africa has defied expectations in reaching the semis and is hoping to achieve the country’s first AFCON final appearance since 1996.
