Morocco’s fairytale performance at the World Cup 2022 continues to resonate with many, including Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni.
In an interview this week with Al Kass, Scaloni described Morocco’s football team as the revelation of the 2022 World Cup.
“The Moroccan national team is the revelation of the World Cup. It’s a combative and harmonious team with a coach I know well. Walid Regragui surprised me with his desire to win matches, as well as the enthusiasm of Morocco’s fans,” Scaloni said.
Morocco’s Atlas Lions’ historic performances at the World Cup in Qatar left a mark on the footballing world.
As they made history to become the first Arab and African country to reach the semi-finals of the prestigious global tournament, Morocco’s national team’s impressive Qatari journey was hailed as an inspiration for underdogs dreaming of challenging the footballing status quo in coming tournaments.
“Morocco deserved the position it reached. I myself congratulated Regragui for his remarkable work,” Scaloni explained.
Months after their team’s remarkable performances in Qatar, Moroccan fans are now full of hope to see the Atlas Lions finally win their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in nearly five decades.
For his part, Regragui is determined to continue making history at the coming AFCON, stressing that he would immediately resign if the Atlas Lions do not reach at least the semi-finals of the continental competition.
“We must have the spirit to be winners; this is why I put pressure on myself and decided to resign if we don’t achieve the semi-finals of the next AFCON,” he said, adding that Morocco seeks to be African champions.
“When we dominate our continent, we can also dominate the world,” he told BBC World Service in April.
