Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has praised the enduring legacy of veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh as the performer marks his 70th birthday.
The congratulatory message was conveyed through a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.
Known affectionately to millions as “Osuofia” after his memorable role in the comedy classics “Ikuku 1 and 2” and “Osuofia in London,” Owoh has long been celebrated for his exceptional comedic talent and versatility as a performer. His contributions to Nigerian cinema include not just acting but also achievements as a comedian, singer, and scriptwriter.
The actor’s illustrious career reached a particular high point in 2008 when he claimed the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his powerful performance in “Stronger Than Pain,” further cementing his position as a cornerstone figure in Nollywood’s golden age.
In his statement, President Tinubu highlighted Owoh’s role in showcasing Nigeria’s cultural heritage to global audiences. “Today, we celebrate a true legend whose talent has brought joy to generations of Nigerians and Africans across the globe,” the president remarked. “Through his iconic roles, particularly as Osuofia, Mr Owoh has etched his name in the annals of our cultural history. He used laughter and creativity to reflect our society’s vibrancy and resilience.”
The president also emphasized Owoh’s impact in uniting communities through storytelling and humor, expressing hopes that his work would continue to inspire Nigeria’s emerging generation of entertainers, particularly those creating content on social media platforms.
Concluding his birthday wishes, President Tinubu extended prayers for Owoh’s continued health, happiness, and creative fulfillment in the years ahead, speaking on behalf of both the government and people of Nigeria.
