Burkina Faso booked their place in the Round of 16 as Group E runners-up with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sudan at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, though the Falcons also progressed to the knockout stages for the first time in 13 years.
The Stallions broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Lassina Traoré headed home at the back post following an aggressive high press. Stéphane Aziz Ki’s chipped cross found the Shakhtar Donetsk forward unmarked, and he made no mistake with a powerful header past Mohamed Abooja for his 13th international goal.
Sudan were handed a golden opportunity to equalise midway through the first half when goalkeeper Hervé Koffi clumsily brought down Al-Jezoli Nouh inside the area. However, Nouh’s weak penalty effort rolled harmlessly wide of the left-hand post, squandering a crucial chance to level the scores.
Koffi, who had been struggling with an injury sustained during the penalty incident, was replaced at half-time by Kilian Nikiema. The substitute goalkeeper was rarely troubled as Burkina Faso controlled proceedings in the second period.
The Stallions sealed victory in the 85th minute when Arsène Kouassi broke into the area to fire home after excellent work from substitute Dango Ouattara. The Lorient defender’s first international goal ensured Burkina Faso’s safe passage to the knockout stages.
Despite the defeat, Sudan’s earlier 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea proved sufficient for them to qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams with three points. It marks their first appearance in the knockout stages since 2012, a significant achievement for Kwesi Appiah’s side.
Burkina Faso will face the winners of Group F—ultimately confirmed as Côte d’Ivoire—in Marrakech on 6 January, whilst Sudan must tackle reigning champions Senegal on 3 January in what promises to be a formidable challenge.
