Former Prime Minister of Burundi, Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, is reportedly missing, Martin Niteretse, Minister of Interior, Community Development and Public Security confirmed.
Speaking to Burundian media, Niteretse said “Yes, there was a search at Alain Guillaume Bunyoni’s home as a result of the ongoing investigations but they did not find him.”
However, he did not reveal what the investigations are about. Several media reports say Bunyoni may have fled the country to Tanzania.
Niteretse also said that the Head of the Department of Foreign Intelligence, Alfred Innocent Museremu, and the Head of the Riot Police Unit, Désiré Uwamahoro, were interrogated on the matter.
In September 2022, President Evariste Ndayishimiye sacked Bunyoni from office and replaced him with Gervais Ndirakobuca.
The Burundian office of prime minister was abolished in 1998, and reinstated in 2020 when Ndayishimiye assumed office and appointed Bunyoni.
His dismissal came at a time when there were political tensions in the country, with President Ndayishimiye warning government officials against any move of carrying out a coup d’état.
