Cardi B And Megan Thee Stallion Keen To Star In ‘B.A.P.S.’ Remake

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion could be re-teaming up for a big screen production. The two Grammy Award-winning artists have reportedly expressed interests in starring in a potential “B.A.P.S.” remake if Robert Townsend confirms a reboot of his female buddy comedy film.

Townsend revealed Cardi and Megan’s hope to star in the potential remake when talking with Slash Film about mixed reaction to the 1997 movie. “It’s so funny because people want a sequel to that,” said the Townsend Entertainment founder. “[There are] people that love, love, love the film and some people that didn’t get it. And those that love it – like you love it and you get it.”

Townsend also added, “I’ve had people go, ‘Hey, we want to do a remake.’ Everybody from Megan Thee Stallion to Cardi B is like, ‘Could we do…’ I mean, it’s like, I don’t know. So, thank you for asking.”

“B.A.P.S.” stars Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle as two “Black American Princesses” who adventure from Georgia to California, attempting to win a video dance girl contest. The plans swiftly change as the women scheme to deceive a wealthy white man.

Speaking of the criticism about the film, Townsend acknowledged, “It’s kind of interesting because some people love ‘B.A.P.S.’ and then some people don’t like ‘B.A.P.S.’, and some people are mad because they go, ‘You gave Halle Berry gold teeth and blonde hair.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I did!’ “

“The Five Heartbeats” director continued, ” ‘Why is Robert doing this kind of comedy?’ But it’s like ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’. It was funny and silly. It’s so funny because people want a sequel to that, and … I don’t know. And then Natalie [Desselle] passed away [in 2020]. But I would love to do a Criterion [Collection] on ‘B.A.P.S.’. I really would.”

In the interview, Townsend did not reveal whether a reboot is in the works, but he seems content with the story in the original film. “It’s a well-made movie and if you go on the ride and go, ‘Oh, it’s two country girls trying to make some money and then they find who they are, and at the end of the day, they do win.’ But it’s because they’re being honest and transparent,” he explained.

Cardi and Megan have collaborated on 2020’s hit “WAP”. The song was released as the lead single of Cardi’s upcoming second studio album, which has yet to arrive. The track received widespread critical acclaim, but social conservative pundits and politicians criticized it for its sexually explicit lyrics. It became a global hit, debuting atop the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and spending multiple weeks at number one in several other countries.
