The Eastern and Central African Sub-Regional (ECASA) Scrabble Championships 2024 is featuring an inspiring contingent of 14 Botswana teenagers aged 13 to 18 taking part in the prestigious tournament being hosted in the country’s capital city.
While the main event involves 40 of the region’s top senior Scrabble players vying for the championship title and the $2,515 prize purse, the inclusion of 8 local females and 6 local males in the youth category underscores ECASA’s commitment to nurturing the region’s next generation of wordsmiths.
Among the Botswana youth participants is a 13-year-old male prodigy who is anagramming those complicated letter combinations with an incredible mental workout.
On the other side of the age bracket, an 18-year-old local female is emerging as one of the youth category’s highest scorers.
As the three-day ECASA 2024 event enters its final day on Easter Sunday, March 31st, it is becoming clear that Scrabble’s rising popularity in Botswana is stretching across all demographics.
While the elite seniors are battling for the main prize, the Botswana youth players’ spirited performances are demonstrating the sport’s inspirational impact on the host nation.
With a mounting array of psychological and social advantages, Scrabble is cementing its place as a powerful tool to uplift and empower the next generation in Botswana.
