Al Ahly announced that the club’s defender Mohamed Abdelmonem has received a hefty fine for his violent conduct in the Egypt Cup final against Pyramids.
The Red Devils clinched their 38th Egypt Cup after coming back from behind to beat Pyramids FC 2-1 after extra-time on Monday evening at Cairo International Stadium.
Walid El-Karti gave Pyramids the lead in the 72nd minute, but just two minutes later, Al Ahly equalised through Mahmoud Kahraba.
Deep into the first-half of extra-time, Hamdi Fathi sealed the win after turning in Hussein El-Shahat’s inch-perfect cross into Ahmed El-Shennawy’s net.
However, things could have gone wrong in the final few minutes as centre-back Mohamed Abdelmonem was sent off following a VAR consultation after it was seen he punched Fakhreddine Ben Youssef in the face off the ball.
After the game, the 24-year-old went on to apologize to both the Tunisian player and Al Ahly fans, saying: “I apologize for the send-off.
“I should have held my nerve, and I also apologize to Fakhreddine Ben Youssef for my behavior. What I did is incorrect.
However, that didn’t stop Al Ahly from imposing a hefty fine on the defender in a short statement, which read:” Al Ahly’s director of football Sayed Abdel-Hafiz decided to impose a fine on Mohamed Abdelmonem for his sending-off in the Egypt Cup final.”
