Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on Wednesday with his Palestinian counterpart Riyad Al-Malki who is visiting Cairo as part of the delegation accompanying Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Shtayyeh.
Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Shoukry stressed during the meeting that Egypt is following with great concern the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the escalation of violence against the Palestinian people.
This coincides with the continuous incursions into Palestinian cities and the continuation of unilateral measures on the Israeli side, including the resumption of settlement activities in violation of international law and international resolutions.
In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs reviewed Egypt’s efforts to support the Palestinian cause in various regional and international frameworks and forums, including hosting the recent Sharm El-Sheik Five-Way meeting and participating in the ministerial meeting of the Munich Formula in mid-January, with the aim of achieving calm and creating an atmosphere for relaunching the peace process.
Shoukry also highlighted the role played by Egypt in the file of reconciliation among Palestinian factions in order to reunify the Palestinian ranks in accordance with the parameters agreed upon in the previous relevant agreements.
For his part, the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs briefed Minister Shoukry on the developments in the occupied territories and the practices and violations suffered by the Palestinian people under occupation.
Al-Malki expressed Palestine’s deep appreciation for Egypt’s historical and consistent role in supporting the Palestinian cause and supporting it to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He also expressed his aspiration for continued consultations and coordination with his Egyptian counterpart during the next stage in order to intensify efforts to defend Palestinian rights and calm the situation on the ground away from the existing Israeli policy of violence and unilateral measures.
