Rumors are swirling that Ghana’s football legend, Andre “Dede” Ayew, might be making a comeback to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
This development comes amid speculation about the potential inclusion of other foreign-based Ghanaian players, such as Crystal Palace’s Eddie Nketiah and Nottingham Forest’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, in the squad for the World Cup.
According to Darius Osei of Angel Sports, a top official of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has hinted that Ayew could be called up to rejoin the Black Stars for the 2026 World Cup if he meets two key conditions: fitness and having a professional football team to play for isn’t mentioned in this version though the quotes are similar.
The FA official was quoted by Darius Osei as saying, Coach Otto Addo would want have Ayew back into the team.
“The coach would want Andre at the mundial, but it will depend on his availability and form, though he is clubless at the moment, if he gets a club and performs so well by February 2026, he may be included in the final squad,” said the official as quoted by Osei.

Ayew has been absent from the Black Stars since Otto Addo took over as head coach following Ghana’s disappointing AFCON 2024 campaign.
However, under the captaincy of Jordan Ayew, Dede’s younger brother, the Black Stars recently secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
The possibility of Ayew’s return has sparked excitement among fans, given his experience and contributions to the team, with some believing he deserves a befitting retirement package from the national team.

He has been a free agent after his contract with French side Le Havre expired at the end of the 2024/2025 season but the veteran forward remains determined to continue his professional career and has been training independently to maintain his fitness while exploring options.
If called up, Ayew would make history as the first Ghanaian player to feature at four World Cups, setting a new national record. The veteran forward previously represented Ghana at the 2010, 2014, and 2022 World Cup tournaments.
The former Marseille, Swansea City, West Ham United and Crystal Palace forward’s potential return would see him surpass all other Ghanaian players in World Cup appearances, cementing his legacy as one of the nation’s greatest ever players.
