The Ghana national team were held to a lackluster 0-0 draw by Namibia in a tune-up match ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The international friendly, played at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, left Black Stars fans concerned about the team’s prospects at the AFCON.
Namibia, ranked over 100 places below Ghana in FIFA’s world rankings, managed to keep the four-time African champion side scoreless on their home pitch. The Brave Warriors defended stoutly, preventing the Black Stars from finding clear scoring opportunities.
The stalemate result means Ghana have won only once in their last five matches under Hughton’s management, raising doubts about the team’s form. After consecutive defeats to Mexico, USA and Comoros, Ghana recorded their sole victory against Madagascar before being held goalless by the Namibian side.
The Black Stars started slowly in the first half, failing to impose themselves on the game. They showed marginally better attacking endeavour after the interval, but struggled to break down the organized Namibian defense.
With the AFCON tournament set to kick off on January 9th, the tepid display against Namibia rings alarm bells for Ghana’s chances of progressing deep into the competition. Hughton and his players have two weeks left to work out their attacking struggles before facing Portugal in their AFCON group stage opener.
