Ghana’s ruling party is bracing for a fierce battle as four prominent figures vie for the coveted presidential nominee position in today’s highly anticipated showdown. With Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia leading the pack as the favourite, Member of Parliament for Assin South Kennedy Agyapong emerges as his main contender.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimo are looking to cause upsets and pull off surprises in this thrilling electoral race.

The successful individual will be entrusted with the responsibility of breaking the long-standing pattern and leading the party into the 2024 general elections.

It is the second round and final phase of the race as over 200,000 party delegates across all 16 regions of the country brace up to participate in the crucial poll to select a suitable candidate for the mission to tackle the looming eight-year election cycle jinx in Ghana’s political history.

Vice President Bawumia has established himself as a formidable force within the party, with his expertise in economics and commitment to development earning him widespread support. His track record and unwavering dedication to the nation’s prosperity have positioned him as the frontrunner, leaving his opponents with an uphill battle to overcome his popularity.

Kennedy Agyapong, a charismatic and influential figure, is not one to be underestimated. Known for his fierce advocacy and grassroots connections, Agyapong has managed to rally a strong base of supporters who believe in his ability to effect meaningful change. His campaign promises to tackle corruption head-on and fight for the rights of ordinary Ghanaians have resonated with many, making him a serious threat to Bawumia’s lead. His threat to give the vice president a showdown seems to have created a lot of attention around this election.

On the other hand, Agriculture Minister Boakye Agyarko and Adai Nimo come into the race with different strategies. Agyarko, leveraging his experience in the agricultural sector, aims to present innovative solutions to boost the nation’s farming industry. Meanwhile, Adai Nimo, with her grassroots appeal and fresh perspective, has gained attention from those seeking a new direction for the ruling party.

The Undertalken

Addressing the press at the Alisa Hotel on Thursday, November 4, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong said the undertaking will be enforced.

“The New Patriotic Party today has had a very successful meeting involving all the major stakeholders in the party including President Akufo-Addo and former President Kufour.”

“At the meeting, all four aspirants were made to sign an undertaking to the effect that they would not resign from the party should they not win the elections. They have also signed an undertaking to support the winner of the party to win the 2024 main elections”, Mr Kodua said.

This comes after former minister of trade, Mr. Kyerematen announced his resignation from the party after the first round contest.

Despite the intense competition, there remains a sense of camaraderie among the contenders. They recognise the importance of maintaining party unity and have pledged to work together regardless of the outcome. This commitment to a common goal showcases their dedication to the party’s success and Ghana’s prosperity as a whole.
