Members of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Ladies Club celebrated the heritage month at an event in Accra to showcase the rich culture of the various ethnic group in the country today, March 29.

The event dubbed Rep Your Region Campaign and under the theme Our Culture, Our Heritage saw members of the club dressed in rich traditional outfits teamed with beautiful jewellery.

They repped their tribes and regions through activities such as drumming and dancing, stories about their history, food, among others.

Ghanaian Culture

The President of GTA Ladies Club, Mrs Francisca Kuukuwah Yanneyba Quansah, said the campaign was aimed at showcasing, marketing and selling the rich Ghanaian culture through food, dressing, music,  dance among others.

She said it was important for GTA to whip up the interest of its staff and the public to appreciate Ghana’s tourism, arts and culture potentials and cross cultural exchange in the country.

She added that GTA had introduced several initiatives such as Domestic and Regional Tourism Programme dubbed Experience Ghana, Share Ghana which offers an opportunity to develop the local tourism since it attracted the people in diaspora into the country.

Mrs Quansah said tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the Ghanaian economy with links to various sectors, providing employment to several young people and creating an avenue for national development.

She also called on stakeholders to partner the ministry and its agencies to deliver its mandate to the good people of Ghana.

Heritage Month

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GTA, Akwasi Agyemang, commended members of the Club for organising the event and said it has demonstrated the unity among the staff at GTA.

“I think the Heritage Month has been very successful, not just because of this in- house display, but also the support we have received from media houses and stakeholders,” he said.

He, however, urged Ghanaians to be proud of their heritage, and do well to consume Made-in-Ghana products.

A Tourism Consultant, Professor Tata Nkunu Akyea, also said although culture was dynamic, Ghanaians must avoid copying blindly but rather uphold their culture.

“Culture is dynamic and not static, however, we should not forget where we come from and we should not copy too much,” he said.

He urged staff of the GTA to learn more since they were the front liners in promoting tourism in the country.
