Madagascar moved into second place in World Cup qualifying Group I with a convincing 2-0 victory over Central African Republic, capitalising on their opponents’ struggles to boost their own qualification hopes.
The Barea dominated proceedings from the outset, with winger Ahmad Raheriniaina proving the catalyst for much of their attacking play. The islanders came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock midway through the first half when Raheriniaina embarked on a mazy run down the right flank before unleashing a fierce drive that cannoned back off the post.
Madagascar’s persistence paid dividends in first-half stoppage time when Raheriniaina turned provider. His expertly delivered cross found Caddy Warren perfectly positioned to convert his maiden international goal with a composed finish.
The hosts doubled their advantage just before the hour mark through another flowing move. Once again, it was Raheriniaina who sparked the attack, launching a swift counter-attack before threading a precise pass to Arnaud Randrianantenaina, who made no mistake with his finish from close range.
The victory sees Madagascar leapfrog Comoros into second place on 13 points, establishing a commanding eight-point gap over fifth-placed Central African Republic. The result puts the Barea in prime position to challenge for one of the qualification spots, with only the group winners guaranteed a place at the 2026 finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Central African Republic’s hopes of reaching their first World Cup appear increasingly remote following this latest setback, with the gap to the qualification places now looking insurmountable.
