Morocco’s Brahim Diaz scored his fourth goal of the tournament to secure a nervy 1-0 victory over Tanzania and send the Atlas Lions into the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals in front of their home supporters in Rabat.
The Real Madrid midfielder struck in the 64th minute, catching goalkeeper Hussein Masalanga off guard at the near post when a cross seemed the more likely option. The goal sparked relief among the crowd of 70,000 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Captain Achraf Hakimi, making his first start after recovering from an ankle injury, completed the full 90 minutes for the tournament hosts. Morocco dominated possession throughout but found it difficult to break down Tanzania’s organised and committed defensive structure.
The Atlas Lions thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute when Ismail Saibari tapped in from close range, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. The first half ended goalless despite Morocco’s territorial dominance.
Tanzania, who reached the knockout stage for the first time in 45 years as one of the best third-placed teams, defended compactly and frustrated the hosts in the final third. The Taifa Stars sat deep, closed spaces effectively and limited clear-cut chances throughout the contest.
Despite continued pressure after Diaz’s breakthrough, Morocco were unable to extend their lead. Tanzania battled on until the final whistle but could not find an equaliser against the hosts, who are seeking their first continental title in 50 years.
Morocco will face either South Africa or Cameroon in the quarter-finals at the Stade Al Medina in Rabat on Friday.
The victory ensures the Atlas Lions can continue playing all their matches at the same venue should they progress to the final on 18th January.
