Morocco coach Walid Regragui has described Thursday’s clash with Mali as “the real start of the competition” for his side.
The Atlas Lions host the Eagles in Rabat in what could prove to be a decisive Group A encounter, with both teams looking to strengthen their position at the top of the standings.
Regragui was respectful of Mali’s abilities but suggested they need greater emotional control. “The day they manage their emotions better, they will be very dangerous,” the Moroccan said.
The hosts will be backed by a passionate home crowd at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, adding extra significance to a match between two of Africa’s strongest sides.
Mali coach Tom Saintfiet acknowledged Morocco’s quality ahead of the 20:00 GMT kick-off.
“Morocco are one of the strongest teams in Africa, if not the world,” said the Belgian, whose side will be looking to make a statement.
However, Saintfiet insisted his team would not sit back. “We have good players, and we will play offensively,” he said.
The Mali coach also referenced his previous success against Morocco, when his Gambia side defeated them 1-0 in 2019 with a defensive approach.
“We won 1-0 by parking the bus with only 21% possession,” Saintfiet recalled. “So, I want to maintain my 100% record against them.”
The contrasting tactical philosophies promise an intriguing encounter, with Morocco expected to dominate possession whilst Mali look to hit on the counter-attack.
A victory for either side would significantly enhance their chances of topping the group and avoiding a potentially difficult round-of-16 tie.
