John Okafor, the comedic actor known to millions as “Mr Ibu,” has died at age 62 after battling a series of health issues including blood clots, according to reports.
The Nollywood star passed away on Saturday March 2 at an Evercare hospital in Lagos following complications from blood clotting that resulted in the amputation of his leg last November.
He had faced the chronic condition for years along with other medical challenges.
Fans across Nigeria mourned Okafor’s death, sharing condolences and memories of his most hilarious film roles on social media.
The beloved comic actor was known for portraying humorous characters that left lasting impressions and brought laughter to audiences.
During his decades-long acting career, Okafor featured in over 200 movies and became a mainstay of Nigeria’s booming “Nollywood” film industry. His eccentric mannerisms and exaggerated expressions made him an iconic face in Nigerian comedy.
After publicly pleading last October for funds to get medical treatment abroad and being deemed unfit for travel, Okafor underwent leg amputation in November 2023, representing a challenging point in his fight against debilitating blood clots.
His health deteriorated in recent months before passing at an Evercare hospital in Lagos.
Okafor, who was 62 years old, is survived by his wife and children. His family said he will be greatly missed, along with his one-of-a-kind talent and humor that entertained Nigerians for generations.
