Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan congratulated the country’s top football club, Simba SC, for advancing to the CAF Champions League quarterfinals by finishing second in a tight Group B.
Despite tying with Wydad AC on points, Simba qualified on superior goal aggregate.
They sealed second place with a commanding 6-0 home win over Jwaneng Galaxy of of Botswana to finish group play with 9 points.
In a statement, President Hassan said Simba’s comprehensive win over the Botswanan club to secure second place in Group B brings immense joy and pride not only to the club’s fans and members, but to all Tanzanians.
“Congratulations to Simba Club for successfully qualifying for the quarter-finals of the African Champions League,” Hassan declared.
“Your success is not only joy and pride for the fans and members of the Lions Club, but also for the Nation and all Tanzanians.”
Hailing the achievement as a unifying success, Hassan emphasized that Simba’s performance in Africa’s biggest club competition uplifts the spirit of the entire country.
Based in Dar es Salaam, Simba SC is Tanzania’s most decorated club, having won 22 league titles.
They now aim to make a deep run in the Champions League to bring further glory to the football-passionate East African nation.
ASEC Mimosas topped Group B with 12 points, while Jwaneng Galaxy came fourth with 4 points.
