President Bola Tinubu touched down in Tokyo on Monday night as Nigeria prepares to take centre stage at one of Africa’s most important diplomatic gatherings.
The Nigerian leader arrived at Haneda International Airport aboard the presidential aircraft at 12:55 local time, beginning his first official visit to Japan since taking office in May 2023.
Japanese Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, who oversees Tokyo’s TICAD relations, greeted Tinubu upon arrival ahead of the three-day summit that opens on Tuesday.
The Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) represents a crucial opportunity for Tinubu to position Nigeria as a premier investment destination for Japanese businesses.
Nigeria’s president will use the Yokohama venue to court both established Japanese investors and potential new entrants across multiple economic sectors.
The conference theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa” reflects Japan’s evolving approach to continental partnerships, moving beyond traditional aid models towards technology-driven collaboration.
Tinubu’s agenda includes high-level bilateral meetings with fellow African leaders and Japanese business executives, alongside participation in plenary sessions examining Africa’s economic transformation.
The summit comes at a pivotal moment for Nigeria, which is seeking to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment to fund infrastructure projects and industrial development.
TICAD has served as Japan’s flagship diplomatic platform for Africa engagement since 1993, bringing together the Japanese government, United Nations agencies, the World Bank and African Union Commission every three years.
Previous conferences have generated billions of dollars in Japanese investment commitments across Africa, from infrastructure projects to technology partnerships.
This year’s gathering follows the 2022 summit hosted by Tunisia and will focus heavily on private sector involvement and institutional strengthening across the continent.
For Nigeria, the conference represents an opportunity to showcase recent economic reforms and highlight opportunities in sectors ranging from renewable energy to digital innovation.
The timing coincides with growing Japanese interest in African markets as companies seek to diversify supply chains and tap into the continent’s demographic dividend.
TICAD9 will conclude on Thursday, with Tinubu expected to continue his Asian tour with a visit to another regional partner before returning to Abuja.
