The 22nd edition of Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally which is underway in Bugesera District is the highlight of the weekend of sports in Rwanda as drivers for different countries across Africa aiming to shine at the race.
A total of 20 drivers of their co-drivers from different countries across Africa are in the Rwanda for the race.
The ongoing rally, which runs until Sunday September 25, is the penultimate round of the African Rally Championship, an international automobile rally championship run under the auspices of the International Federation of Automobiles (FIA).
The drivers competing are from five countries namely host nation Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda Kenya, and Zambia.
They will compete in eight sub-stages, with the first sub stages, with the opening sub stage starting from Gako while the last sub stage stops in Ruhuha.
Kenyan driver Carl “Flash” Tundo is the reigning champion for the rally but he is not taking part in this year’s edition to defend his title.
Zambian Leroy Gomes, who is the highest-ranked driver of the 2022 FIA African Rally Championship with 102 points, is favorite to win the Rwandan Rally and faces stiff competition from his Kenyan rival Karan Patel prior to the decisive Zambian Rally.
Meanwhile, Miss Rwanda 2017 finalist Queen Kalimpinya has eyes set on impressing at this year’s race just month after introducing herself in the motorsport racing.
The rally kicked off Friday with the Super Stage that was meant to determine car order on the grid for Saturday’s race.
