The African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has assurred party members that its upcoming elective conference will a democratic one, during which legitimate individuals will be voted for to serve in key positions.
Ramaphosa made the remarks in Delmas, Mpumalanga, as part of the ANC’s Letsema campaign on Saturday, 3 September 2022, SABC News reports. Nominations for the ANC elective conference are set to be formally submitted from Thursday, 8 September until sometime in December.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has encouraged those keen to serve in leadership positions in the ANC to launch their campaigns.
“The 4000 or so branches of the ANC will get involved in nominations of those they would like to see in the leadership of the ANC at the National Conference, the 55th Conference of the ANC. We don’t anticipate and there won’t be any firm of disruption, violence, it’s going to be very orderly processes in line with the democratic culture of the African National Congress.”
ANC President Cyril RamaphosaAlthough he is yet to make an official announcement, Ramaphosa is expected to run for a second term, but not without opposition. In addition, several prominent figures within the ANC are vying to become Ramaphosa’s deputy.
These include current Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, who has been vocal in his call for the party to invest in young leadership.
“The ANC, in all its structures, does need generational mix it. It does need a youthful organisation to infuse energy and also to infuse a new direction that is also what the generation of Tambo did (when) they came from the youth league the generation of Mandela and many generations of youth leagues, that is what must also happen in the national conference. There must be a generational mix for the ANC to remain relevant. (It) must infuse young people,” Lamola said earlier this year in Limpopo.
