The South African Police Service(SAPS) Golf Day fundraising event raised R3 million for the educational needs of the children of police officers who died in the line of duty.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), 100 players from various organisations and private companies came together to tee off to raise funds for the South African Police Service Education Trust Fund (SAPSET).
The South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) Fund provides financial support to the educational needs of many deceased members’ children. SAPSET currently funds children from grade RR to the tertiary level. The Fund has reportedly assisted more than 1000 children with their educational needs.
Edzani Mabada was one of those who represented the beneficiaries at the event.
Edzani Mabada, the 25-year-old daughter of the late Warrant Officer Thomas Mabada who was killed in the line of duty in 2015, was also funded by the Trust to complete her National Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
“SAPSET has been there for us through difficult times as a family since my dad died in 2015, and as much as we can’t feel his presence physically, we can feel it through the SAPS Education Trust,” she said
Minister of Police General Bheki Cele paid gratitude to all sponsors and donors for ploughing back to the children of the police who died in the line of duty. He also urged the newly appointed SAPSET of Trustees to go the extra mile to raise more funds.
“We can only ensure that the kids of the fallen police are taken care of. The SAPS should continue to be a caring organisation for these kids and do what their parents could have done if they were still alive. The new board of trustees must find ways to raise more funds and make it grow. Thank you very much for your contributions to a good cause,” Cele said.
