Two suspected armed robbers were killed during a shootout with police in South Africa’s City of Durban, on Wednesday May 24, 2023.
The two were allegedly involved in the robbery of a courier vehicle.
Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) responded to an armed robbery on Wednesday after a courier vehicle was reportedly targeted while travelling along the N2 highway near Paddock in the early hours.
“The suspects stole electronic devises [sic] among other items,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker.
The police investigation led to Newlands East, where three suspects were found offloading the suspected stolen property upon arrival.
Naicker said the three suspects ignored the police’s instructions to surrender and opened fire. A shootout ensued, and two of the suspects were found to have fatal gunshot wounds in the aftermath.
The third suspect was arrested, and SAPS members confiscated two firearms at the scene. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the incident.
