South African President pledges full support to families after deadly George Building disaster

He arrived at the Garden Route District Municipality offices in the Western Cape

President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed that the South African government will do everything possible to support and assist the families impacted by the catastrophic building collapse in George.

It comes during the a meeting at the Garden Route District Municipality offices in the Western Cape where he received an update on the extent of the work done and support that has been provided for the families since the disaster struck.

“We do not want to increase the burden, the suffering, and the grief that you are going through,” Ramaphosa said during a visit to the disaster site on Thursday. “We want to be there as government at all levels to demonstrate our compassion.”

He held a briefing with various people involved in the rescue and dealing with all aspects of the disaster, including a number of Ministers, and Western Cape Premier, Allan Winde.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday when a partially constructed building in George suddenly collapsed with 81 workers inside. Search and rescue efforts remain ongoing, but the toll has been devastating so far.

According to the latest update from George Municipality, 62 people have been recovered from the rubble. Of those, 32 have tragically lost their lives, while 12 remain hospitalized. 19 individuals are still unaccounted for as crews race to locate any potential survivors.

During his briefing at the scene, Ramaphosa commended the rescue personnel for their valiant efforts and professionalism in such a harrowing situation. He said he is satisfied with South Africa’s ability to handle this type of large-scale disaster response.

The president assured families that no stone will be left unturned in determining accountability and finding answers for how and why this catastrophe occurred.

“It will take some time for all aspects of this disaster to be properly tied together,” Ramaphosa stated. “I can assure you that the seriousness in which this matter is being [dealt with] will lead to the truth coming out.”

While acknowledging the immense grief and desire for immediate solutions, he urged patience as authorities thoroughly investigate the collapsed building’s cause.

Ramaphosa offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a full recovery for the injured workers. He said the government’s focus is on saving any remaining lives, caring for victims, properly handling remains, and assisting with repatriations or burials.

The president emphasized his administration’s commitment to being fully transparent as more facts and details emerge from this tragic incident that has rocked the George community.
