Ivory Coast’s historic first appearance in a World Cup knockout match ended in heartbreak at Dallas Stadium, Arlington, on Tuesday, as a late Erling Haaland strike sent Norway into the round of 16 with a 2-1 victory.
The Elephants gave a bold account of themselves, pulling level through substitute Amad Diallo in the 74th minute, only for Haaland’s clinical 86th-minute finish to extinguish their hopes.
Emerse Fae’s side started the brighter of the two teams, with Nicolas Pepe and Yan Diomande causing persistent problems for the Norwegian backline. Ghislain Konan fired into the side-netting from a tight angle, while Pepe was wasteful when latching on to a Diomande cross at the far post. The Elephants lacked the composure to find a breakthrough.
Norway punished them against the run of play. Antonio Nusa received a pass from Martin Odegaard, cut inside onto his right foot and curled a stunning effort past Yahia Fofana into the top right-hand corner in the 39th minute — a moment of individual brilliance that belied the balance of play.
Fae’s decision to introduce Amad Diallo from the bench in the 60th minute proved inspired. The Manchester United winger first cleared Torbjorn Heggem’s effort off the line before producing a brilliant equaliser, playing a one-two with Pepe, jinking past a Norwegian defender and firing past Nyland in the 74th minute.
Yet Haaland had the final say. Oscar Bobb threaded a pass to Patrick Berg, who rolled the ball across for the Manchester City forward to tap home from close range and restore Norway’s lead with four minutes remaining. Diallo struck the crossbar with a late free-kick but Ivory Coast could not find a second equaliser.
Speaking afterwards, Diallo said: “Côte d’Ivoire can feel really proud. We showed what we are capable of at this level.”
Norway, who won a World Cup knockout match for the first time, face Brazil in the round of 16 on Sunday. Haaland finishes with five goals in three appearances at the tournament.
