The Municipal chief executive (MCE) for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai in the Western North Region, Alfred Amoah, and his personal driver died in a road crash Tuesday evening, government officials have confirmed.

The accident, according to eyewitnesses, occurred at Apedwa near Tafo in the Eastern Region.

Multiple media reports say the MCE was travelling in his Nissan Patrol with a registration number GN 2060 – 18 along with his driver, with the other accident vehicles identified as a trailer with registration number, As 4229 – X and a fuel tanker with registration number, GN – 8549 – X.

He and his driver suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot, hospital sources at the Kibi Government Hospital said.

“The MCE and his driver got trapped in the vehicle and both suspected dead on the spot. With the help of the National Fire Service from Bunso and Kibi the bodies of the deceased were removed and sent to Kibi Government Hospital where they were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty,” a police situational report seen by Asaaseradio.com said.

“Sad to hear the death of Hon. Alfred Amoah, MCE for Bibiani Anwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly and his driver Samuel Gyasi. Both Alfred and Samuel have been dedicated patriots who served with dignity and passion.
May the souls of our dear brothers rest in perfect peace,” the vice-president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia posted on Facebook on Wednesday (13 July 2022).

Western North regional minister, Richard Rocky Joojo Obeng also confirmed the report to the state-owned Graphic Online on Tuesday, saying he and Amoah parted ways from a meeting in Accra hours before the crash.

The police have commenced investigations into the motor crash.

“A Man Diesel Fuel tanker driven by Habibu Adam aged 35 years, with an empty tank from Kumasi direction on seeing the danger ahead, applied his brakes to avoid a crash. In the process, he lost control of the steering wheel, veered off his lane and landed into a ditch on the offside when facing Accra direction,” Citi FM quoted a police statement.

Government officials, including ministers and deputies, metropolitan, municipal and district chief executive officers, chief executive officers appointed by the President and presidential staffers have been attending a five-day retreat to discuss the national economy and to take stock of programmes.

The retreat which started last Friday, discussed the various flagship programmes of the government and the reason for accessing an IMF programme, as well as reviewed the cost-cutting measures announced at the last cabinet meeting in March this year.
