Health authorities in Nigeria have cautioned the general public about using alternative herbal remedies as treatment for the bacterial disease – diphtheria.

This warning was issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) via its official social media page on Tuesday.

It said, “Herbal drinks and tea may offer comfort but they are NOT a cure for diphtheria. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect infection or notice any of the symptoms of #diphtheria. Early treatment saves lives!”

This advisory comes as NCDC continues efforts to contain the resurgence of diphtheria infections, especially in Lagos state. There are worries that some patients are opting for homemade herbal mixtures, drinks and concoctions instead of getting clinically tested antibiotics needed to fight the respiratory disease.

Diphtheria is a contagious infection caused by the bacterium, Corynebacterium species, that could be fatal if left untreated. It often begins mildly with sore throat, low fever and difficulty swallowing. As the disease progresses, a sheet-like covering can grow over the back of the throat which causes breathing difficulties.

Other symptoms include skin rash, fast heartbeat, nausea and vomiting. But early diagnosis and administering antitoxins are vital for positive outcomes as toxins from the bacteria can paralyze muscles, including the heart.

Health officials project the figures may rise if people opt for home remedies instead of urgent medical care at designated treatment centers. They also fear the disease could spread faster during end-of-year gatherings.

NCDC continues to bolster resources to handle the outbreak while launching public awareness campaigns on diphtheria prevention through hygiene, childhood immunization and prompt clinical management in Nigeria.
