The Nigerian U-20 team, known as the Flying Eagles, got their 2023 African Games campaign up and running with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Sudan’s Bright Stars on Monday evening at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Sadiq Isiyaka’s penalty proved the difference as the Flying Eagles grabbed an important win in their second Group B game.
It was a match of missed chances for the Nigerians, who were wasteful in front of goal throughout the contest. South Sudan actually had the first shot on target, forcing Nathaniel Nwosu into an early save from long range.
Nigeria started to create chances of their own, with Sunday Joseph, Chibueze Izuogu and Rabiu Abdullahi all missing good opportunities to break the deadlock in the first half. Joseph was particularly guilty of squandering multiple chances.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Suleiman Idris trying his luck from distance twice without success. Joseph spurned another golden opportunity just after the restart.
Just when it looked like Nigeria may have to settle for a frustrating draw, they were handed a lifeline in the 81st minute when awarded a penalty. Sadiq Isiyaka stepped up and coolly slotted home the spot kick to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Nigeria could have doubled their advantage in stoppage time but Charles Agada inexplicably missed two gilt-edged chances from close range.
Despite the slew of missed chances, the Flying Eagles will take confidence from grabbing the three points after their defeat to Uganda in the Group opener on Thursday.
