Ghana’s hopes of a strong start at the 2024 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, Morocco, were dashed as they suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Zambia in their opening group match.
The Black Futsal squad got off to a promising start, with Emmanuel Pako Nakotey giving them the lead just five minutes into the game with a clever finish. However, their joy was short-lived as Zambia’s Patrick Banda equalized before halftime.
Despite Ghana’s efforts to regain the lead in the first half, Zambia’s goalkeeper, Jackson Chitungu, put up a formidable display, denying scoring opportunities from Saviour Tsatsu and captain Timothy Kantanka Ntiamoah.
Zambia took control in the second half, with star player Francis Chinyama leading the charge. His powerful strike early in the second period gave Zambia the lead, and Wiseman Phiri quickly followed suit, extending their advantage.
Although Philip Nii Boye managed to reduce Ghana’s deficit late in the game, Zambia sealed their comprehensive victory with two additional goals from Mbalika Mwaliteta and Jackson Simwami, making the final score 5-2.
This commanding win propelled Zambia to the top of Group A, while Ghana now face a daunting task in their next group fixture against the host nation, Morocco.
The Black Futsal squad will need to regroup quickly and learn from their mistakes if they hope to keep their hopes alive in the prestigious continental tournament.
Despite the setback, Ghana’s participation in the Futsal Africa Cup of Nations underscores the growing popularity and development of the futsal discipline in the country.
