African Leaders have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the people of Morocco following an earthquake that has claimed more than 2,000 people’s lives.
Moroccan earthquake survivors huddled for a night in the open on the High Atlas Mountains on Saturday, a day after the country’s deadliest quake in more than six decades.
According to the Interior Ministry, 2,012 people had been killed and 2,059 injured, including 1,404 in critical condition. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 6.8 with an epicentre some 72 km (45 miles) southwest of Marrakech
Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, has expressed his “deepest sympathy and solidarity” message to the people of Morocco.
“On behalf of all Rwandans, I express our deepest sympathy and solidarity with King Mohammed VI, the families of the victims, and the people of Morocco in this moment of profound tragedy.”
“Rwanda stands with Morocco in this difficult time.”
South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa also said:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people and the Government of Morocco as they are experiencing devastation brought on by an earthquake. We send our deepest condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
“South Africa stands with you in your time of need.”
Ghana’s president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo joined his counterparts and said:
“On behalf and people of Ghana, I extend my deepest condolences to King Mohammed VI and to the Government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco on the tragedy which has been occasioned by Friday’s earthquake, and has claimed the lives of thousands.”
“We pray for the families of the victims, and wish the injured speedy recovery.”
The Ghanaian leader added that: “Morocco has a friend in Ghana, and she can count on our support in these difficult times.”
Nigerian Leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu added that:
“I commiserate with all families who lost loved ones and all those otherwise affected by this tragedy, while wishing a full and swift recovery to those who were injured.”
“I assure the government and people of Morocco that the heartfelt prayers and thoughts of Nigerians are with them during this difficult moment of tragedy.”
Tanzanian President, Samia Suluhu Hassan said:
“On behalf of the Government and the people of Tanzania, I extend my heartfelt condolences to King Mohammed VI, the bereaved families, and all the people of Morroco during this difficult time.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
