The African Union (AU) has commemorated International Youth Day with a call to harness digital technologies for sustainable development across the continent.
Under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development”, the AU highlighted its flagship youth programme, the 1 Million Next Level initiative.
The African Union Commission said the programme demonstrates its commitment to “accelerating youth development and engagement strategies” by creating opportunities within the digital ecosystem.
Several key initiatives have been launched through the programme, including:
- The AU Civic Tech Fund
- African Union Digital and Innovation Fellowship Programme
- AU Innovation Lab
These schemes aim to support young people’s digital initiatives and expose them to opportunities in technology and innovation.
The AU emphasised the “immense potential” of Africa’s youth and their crucial role in the continent’s development.
International Youth Day is observed annually on 12 August. This year’s AU message underscores the growing importance of digital skills and innovation in shaping Africa’s future.
The continent has one of the world’s youngest populations, with about 60% of Africans under the age of 25, according to UN figures.
Analysts say harnessing this demographic dividend through targeted programmes like those highlighted by the AU could be key to accelerating economic growth and social development across Africa.
