In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco last week, American manufacturing giant Boeing has pledged a $300,000 donation to support the country’s recovery efforts.
The earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, left a trail of devastation and claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, with rural communities being the hardest hit.
Boeing’s donation aims to provide crucial assistance to those affected by the earthquake, according to a report from CBS News.
The company has committed to splitting the funds evenly between two reputable humanitarian organizations: the American Red Cross and Care International.
Half of the $300,000 contribution will be directed toward the American Red Cross, which will use the funds to provide shelter and hygiene kits to earthquake survivors.
The other half of Boeing’s donation will be channeled to Care International, a renowned global humanitarian organization.
The second half of the contribution will be used to provide emergency water, food, and medical support to the affected communities.
The earthquake, which struck central Morocco last Friday, has brought widespread devastation to Morocco, destroying hundreds of buildings.
Its far-reaching repercussions in Morocco may result in economic losses equivalent to approximately 8% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates.
Similarly, a recent report by the World Bank, which based its assessment on Morocco’s 2022 GDP projection of $134.18 billion, estimated the loss to the country from the earthquake to at $10.7 billion.
As rescue operations conclude a week after the tragic earthquake struck central Morocco, Moroccan authorities are taking steps toward rebuilding the demolished areas. A ministerial committee met earlier this week to discuss plans to reconstruct damaged areas.
