Burkina Faso produced one of the most extraordinary finishes in Africa Cup of Nations history, scoring twice deep into stoppage time to overturn a 1-0 deficit and defeat ten-man Equatorial Guinea 2-1 at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
The Stallions appeared destined for a disappointing opening result after Marvin Anieboh had put Equatorial Guinea ahead in the 85th minute. However, substitute Georgi Minoungou equalised in the fifth minute of added time before Edmond Tapsoba powered home a dramatic winner in the eighth minute of stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations amongst the Burkinabe contingent.
The opening period proved frustrating for both sides, with neither team able to create clear-cut opportunities despite an intense tempo and physical battles across the pitch. Burkina Faso controlled possession but struggled to penetrate Equatorial Guinea’s disciplined defensive structure, which sat deep in a compact 4-1-4-1 formation.
The contest shifted decisively early in the second half when Basilio Ndong received a straight red card in the 50th minute for a dangerous challenge. The dismissal forced Equatorial Guinea coach Juan Micha to reorganise his side, whilst Burkina Faso sought to exploit their numerical superiority.
Les Étalons believed they had broken through in the 71st minute when Lassina Traoré found the net following good work from Dango Ouattara. However, VAR intervened to rule the goal offside, adding to the mounting frustration of the Burkina Faso players and supporters.
Against the run of play, Equatorial Guinea stunned their opponents with just five minutes remaining. Carlos Akapo whipped in a corner from the left and Anieboh rose highest to power a header past goalkeeper Hervé Koffi, giving the ten men a shock lead.
Burkina Faso threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, refusing to accept defeat despite the ticking clock. Their persistence was rewarded when Minoungou reacted quickest to bundle the ball home in the 95th minute after chaos in the Equatorial Guinea penalty area, possibly following a foul on Ouattara.
With Equatorial Guinea visibly exhausted and still reeling from conceding the equaliser, Burkina Faso launched one final attack. Cyriaque Irie reached the byline and delivered a precise cross which the goalkeeper could only parry. Tapsoba reacted fastest to head home the rebound, completing an astonishing turnaround and sending the Burkinabe bench into raptures.
The victory puts Burkina Faso level on three points with Algeria at the top of Group E, following the Fennecs’ 3-0 victory over Sudan earlier in the evening. Equatorial Guinea, despite their courageous performance with ten men, remain bottom of the group without points.
For Burkina Faso, the dramatic comeback demonstrates the resilience and never-say-die attitude that has become a hallmark of their recent tournament performances. Manager will be pleased with his side’s persistence, though concerned about their inability to break down the opposition earlier when enjoying a man advantage.
Equatorial Guinea will feel devastated by the manner of defeat, having defended so admirably with ten men for over 40 minutes only to concede twice in the dying moments. However, they can take encouragement from their organisational discipline and will hope to bounce back in their remaining group fixtures.
