Former Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta who is the East Africa Community (EAC) facilitator of the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo has called for ceasefire and strict adherence to the Luanda Agreements.
The Luanda Agreement was an agreement between the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Uganda on the withdrawal of Ugandan troops from the Democratic Republic of the Congo cooperation and the normalisation of relations between the two countries.
The calls for the ceasefire came after a two-day fighting erupted in restive North Kivu.
“Following break out of serious fighting in DRC North Kivu region, the Facilitator of the EAC peace process in Eastern DRC has expressed serious concern for the targeted killings of civilians by armed groups,” reads a statement.
Uhuru said as a result of the fighting, there are thousands of internally displaced people in the region who are vulnerable to a lot of risks. The former president called for a return to the Nairobi Peace Process on consultations to build peace in worrying sides in DRC. “I urge the DRC government and the international community to step up their support to the IDPs,” Uhuru said.
The mediator has facilitated three peace talks meetings at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi between the rebels and the DRC government.
