Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has praised the country’s South Region for its exceptional fruit and vegetable production this season.
In a social media post, he highlighted the region’s bountiful harvest, which yielded 3.45 million metric tons of fruits and 760,000 metric tons of vegetable crops.
The Ethiopian leader emphasised the need to replicate this success across other regions of the country. He urged for intensified efforts nationwide, aiming to strengthen Ethiopia’s food security and ensure sustainable growth.
“We must intensify our efforts across other regions, working towards a unified progress that strengthens our food security ambitions and ensures sustainable growth for the entire nation,” Mr Abiy wrote.
The prime minister also noted the South Region’s wealth of natural resources, suggesting that these played a crucial role in the bumper harvest.
This development comes as Ethiopia continues to face challenges in food security, with recurring droughts and conflicts affecting agricultural production in various parts of the country.
The government’s focus on boosting agricultural output aligns with its broader economic reform agenda, which aims to transform Ethiopia into a middle-income country by 2025.
