Ghana’s parliament has passed the Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023, under a certificate of urgency.
The passing of this bill will enable the interior ministry to issue licenses to farmers who are interested in planting of cannabis in smaller quantities.
The approved type of cannabis should not have more than 0.3% THC content on a dry-weight basis for industrial purposes for obtaining fibre or seed or for medicinal purposes.
The bill establishes the Narcotics Control Commission, a body responsible for controlling and eliminating narcotic drug trafficking.
It is estimated that Ghana can cash in about $40billion in the global cannabis market.
Malawi, Zambia and Lesotho are among the other African nations that have legalized or relaxed laws on cannabis.
