Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has finally announced his retirement from active football, three years after featuring for the Black Stars.
It comes two years after completing a a year deal with Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities in a difficult mission of career relaunch in the local scene.
In a media release issued on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, Gyan,37, said “it is time to hang the jersey and boots in glory as I retire officially for active football
“I want to take this great opportunity, a stage that is difficult in every footballer’s career, a moment all footballers do not wish but when,” Gyan said adding that he is “minded by views shared by great business men and the sporting gurus.”

In an illustrious career that lasted for 20 years Gyan carved an enviable figure for himself, becoming the country’s highest goal scorer in three different the World Cups.
He scored the country’s first ever World Cup goal against the Czech Republic at the 2006 competition and became a villain in 2010 World Cup when he missed a last gap penalty against Uruguay, a game Ghana eventually lost in the shootout.
He is also the all-time leading scorer for the Ghana national team, with 51 goals in 106 appearances. He helped Ghana reach the round of 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Gyan began his professional career in 2003 with Liberty Professionals in Ghana. He then went on to play for clubs in France, England, Turkey, China, and the United Arab Emirates.
