The Ghanaian government has taken a decisive step in its battle against illegal mining with the announcement of the “Blue Water Initiative” and the training of its first batch of “River Guards.”

The program, revealed by Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, represents a cornerstone of President Mahama’s environmental restoration agenda.

These specially trained guards will serve as frontline defenders of Ghana’s water bodies, which have suffered severe degradation from illegal mining activities, locally known as “galamsey.”

Drawing inspiration from the young pioneers of Ghana’s past, the River Guards will maintain vigilance over vulnerable waterways throughout the country.

“As part of President Mahama’s commitment to restoring and protecting our environment while rehabilitating polluted water bodies, we are proud to announce the launch of the “ Blue Water Initiative” and the training of the first batch of “The River Guards”, ” he said.
“These dedicated individuals will act as vigilant stewards of our rivers, in the spirit of the young pioneers of old to safeguard our water bodies from the harmful effects of illegal mining activities.”

The official unveiling of the training program is scheduled for Monady 17th March, 2024 at the Ezlinbo Naval Base in the Western Region, marking a significant advancement in the government’s comprehensive Blue Water Initiative.

Environmental experts have long warned about the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s once-pristine rivers and streams, with many water bodies now contaminated by mercury and other toxic chemicals used in illegal gold extraction. This contamination threatens not only aquatic ecosystems but also the health of communities that depend on these water sources.

The River Guards program aims to combine enforcement with education, creating a sustainable approach to environmental protection while addressing the socioeconomic factors that drive illegal mining activities.
