Ghana’s U-20 national team will face reigning champions Senegal alongside DR Congo and Central African Republic in Group C of this month’s CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The draw, conducted on Sunday in Cairo, has placed the Black Satellites in what analysts are calling one of the tournament’s most challenging groups.
Coach Desmond Ofei’s squad has been preparing intensively, including a training camp in Morocco, as they look to navigate a difficult path in the competition running from 27 April to 18 May.
Egypt stepped in as hosts after Côte d’Ivoire withdrew from staging the tournament, which brings together Africa’s most promising young football talents.
“The Black Satellites will need to be at their absolute best from the opening match,” said football analyst James Kwarteng. “Facing the defending champions Senegal early will be a significant test of their championship credentials.”
Ghana’s team is currently training in Accra and will play several friendly matches before departing for Egypt.
Should they advance from the group stage, potential knockout opponents include hosts Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and Zambia.
The tournament serves as an important development platform for Africa’s next generation of footballing stars, with many players traditionally using it as a springboard to professional careers in Europe.
