Dreams FC secured their first victory in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage with a 2-1 triumph over Nigerian side Rivers United at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday in their second group C game.
A 35th-minute header from veteran striker John Antwi and 74th strike from 18-year-old talent Abdul Aziz Issah gave Dreams FC the needed 3 points in their maiden Africa campaign.
The win comes after Dreams lost 2-0 to Club Africain last week at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agreb.
Antwi rose highest in the box to head home a pinpoint cross from the right flank on 35 minutes to hand Dreams FC the lead going into the break. The experienced striker timed his run perfectly to shake off his marker and guide his header into the bottom corner.
Young striker Issah then doubled the lead in the second half after showing great technique to take a pass in his stride, shift the ball onto his favored left foot, and curl a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Rivers managed to pull one back in stoppage time through midfielder Alex Oyowah, but it was too little, too late.
Dreams FC’s defense held firm to claim a vital 2-1 victory that keeps their hopes of advancing from the group alive.
Speaking after the match, Dreams FC coach X said: “This was a very important win for us…the players showed great character and commitment today.”
The result leaves Dreams FC third in Group C on 3 points, just as Rivers United who are second on superior goals while Tunisia’s Club Africain tops the group with 6 points after two games. Dreams FC will play Club african at home on matchday 3 next week.
