The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has called on agencies under the Ministry to uphold and maintain the best practices established by USAID Partnership for Education over the past nine years.
The partnership supports the Ministry of Education to improve the reading performance of pupils in public primary schools.
The Minister said this during the National Close-out ceremony for USAID Partnership for Education Learning on Wednesday in Accra Ghana’s capital.
He gave the assurance that Ghana would use the USAID Partnership for Education Learning’s success to reform the educational system.
The learning activity, a nine-year (2014-2023) activity of the USAID, supported the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and other affiliated institutions to improve the reading performance for early grade pupils.
He said investing in the future literacy of this nation remained the safest approach to alter its course, adding that the government would ensure that the successes chocked were maintained.
Dr Adutwum said it was important that every child in the country irrespective of where they found themselves were allowed to succeed.
“I believe that the better days of this nation are ahead of us and not behind us. If we leverage what we learn from these partnerships, especially the partnership that we are celebrating today, we will create a more equitable society through education,” he said.
Dr Adutwum said it was imperative that foundational learning be given the necessary attention because it was key to national development.
On her part, the Mission Director of USAID, Kimberly Rosen, expressed satisfaction with the project implementation and the outcomes.
She said about 14 million locally developed and context-relevant TLMs, including Braille, had been distributed to over 16,000 primary schools.
“Over 68,000 teachers, curriculum leads and head teachers were trained using a systematic phonics-based teaching methodology,” she added.
