Ghana’s incoming president, John Mahama has completed a series of diplomatic visits to neighboring African nations ahead of his January 7 inauguration, promising to continue working “towards a brighter, more prosperous future for our youth and the vulnerable”.
In his cliimaxing his tour, Mahama met with the Presidents of Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and Gabon, emphasizing his commitment to strengthening regional ties.
“I just wrapped up an incredible visit with the Presidents of Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and Gabon as part of my commitment to fostering strong relationships with our geographical neighbours and friends in West Africa and on the continent,” Mahama stated, highlighting the focus on mutual benefits for participating nations.
“My discussions with the various leaders reaffirmed our shared values and aspirations for progress across the continent.
“Our conversations touched on exploring opportunities for collaboration in trade, security, and sustainable development, ensuring that our partnerships benefit not only our nations but the people we serve.
“I will continue to work both within and outside our subregion towards a brighter, more prosperous future for our youth and the vulnerable.”
The former president, who previously served from July 2012 to January 2017, is set to return to office after a landslide victory in the December 7, 2024 election.
The diplomatic tour, which also included eaier visits to Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, demonstrates Mahama’s priority of reinforcing relationships with West African neighbors.
Mahama’s return to the presidency comes after two previous unsuccessful bids in 2016 and 2020. According to the provided information, he secured victory in the 2024 election with a margin of over 1.5 million votes over the outgoing vice president.
He defeated outgoing vice president Mahmud Bawumia, who was making his first attempt.
Mahama’s inauguration is slated for January 7 at the black star square, in the capital Accra, with many World leaders expected to grace the occasion.
