The ongoing heatwave will persist until Thursday, a new weather alert said on Wednesday.
The General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) said that temperatures between 30 and 44 degrees Celsius will hit several regions across Morocco today and Thursday.
The weather alert concerns Taroudant, Fquih Ben Salah, El Kelaa des Sraghan, Marrakech, Rehamna, Zagora, Errachidia, and Tata, with temperatures ranging between 38 and 43 degrees.
The same weather will affect Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Essaouira, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane Guelmim Tan Tan, Laayoune, Boujdour, Aousserd, and Oued Eddahab.
The orange level weather alert also forecasts temperatures of 38 and 44 degrees in other provinces on Thursday, including Zagora, Tata, Es-Semara, and AssaZaq.
Provinces like Boujdour, Aousserd, and Oued Eddahab, will also be affected by the heatwave on Thursday.
Such weather is usual, particularly in southern provinces. However, this coming heat wave is set to add pressure to the agriculture season – which has already been affected by climate challenges.
Hit by the severest drought in the past three decades, Morocco has been stepping up measures to tackle the situation, including the management of the ongoing water crisis.
On Tuesday, King Mohammed VI chaired a meeting dedicated to overseeing the progress made in the implementation of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation.
In the meeting, the government announced its decision to increase the current budget allocated to the program to MAD 143 billion, or $14.3 billion to boost supply of drinking water to rural areas as well as accelerating the transition to non-conventional water sources such as desalinated seawater.
The program also aims to increase the share of treated wastewater resume capacities.
