Heavy stormy rains ranging between 20 to 35 millimeters are expected on Wednesday from midnight to 1 p.m in several local provinces of Morocco, according to the country’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
In its latest weather alert bulletin, the DGM said that Beni Mellal, Azilal, Khenifra, Chefchaouen, Ouezzane, El Hajeb, Ifrane, and Sefrou will be affected by this week’s heavy rainfall.
DGM has recently forecast that Morocco will experience temperatures above average starting this month until July. According to the directorate, temperatures will rise above average with a heatwave encompassing the entire kingdom during the months of May, June, and July.
Due to climate change, Morocco is undergoing one of the worst periods of drought that it has ever experienced in the past forty years, according to Abdelfettah Sahibi, chief of the DGM.
Meanwhile, Minister for Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, has said that the DGM is committed to developing the sector by implementing a strategic plan of the Ministry in the meteorological sector.
While the soil is in paramount need of rain, according to Baraka, the ministry seeks to accelerate the completion of dams and the connection of basins.
