Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet has won her second gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics, triumphing in the women’s 10,000m final at the Stade de France.
The 24-year-old crossed the line in 30:43.25, just a tenth of a second ahead of Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who took silver. The Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan claimed bronze with a time of 30:44.12.
Chebet’s victory follows her gold in the 5,000m earlier in the week, marking a stunning Olympic debut for the Kenyan athlete.
She becomes the first Kenyan to win the Women’s 10,000m at the Olympics and only the 3rd Women to win the 5k and 10k double
The race began as a tactical affair, building to a thrilling climax in the final lap. Hassan, aiming for an ambitious treble of 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon titles, made her move with 200m to go. However, Chebet’s superior pace in the closing stages secured her the victory.
Battocletti’s silver represents a significant achievement for Italian distance running, while Hassan’s bronze adds to her impressive Olympic medal haul.
The American trio of Weini Kelati, Karissa Schweizer, and Parker Valby finished eighth, ninth, and 11th respectively.
Chebet has won both of Kenya’s gold medals, which places the country at the top of Africa’s gold medal rankings in these Olympics.
Her double gold success cements her status as one of the stars of these Games, with the Stade de France crowd witnessing another memorable night of athletics.
