Algeria’s 17-year-old gymnast Kaylia Nemour has emerged as a formidable force at the Paris Olympics after outperforming gymnastics legend Simone Biles on the uneven bars during Sunday’s qualifications.
Nemour’s breathtaking routine on the uneven bars earned her an impressive score of 15.600 points, securing her spot in both the apparatus and women’s all-around finals. The French-born athlete’s performance was marked by its technical difficulty and acrobatic prowess, leaving spectators at Bercy Arena in awe.
China’s Qiu Qiyuan, also 17 and the reigning world champion on uneven bars, placed second with a score of 15.066 points. Meanwhile, four-time Olympic champion Simone Biles, 27, scored 14.433 on what is considered her weakest apparatus, potentially jeopardizing her chances of making the eight-woman final.
Nemour’s success extended beyond the uneven bars. She executed a solid Yurchenko double twist vault, scoring 14.000 points. Despite minor errors on floor (13.160) and beam (13.200), her overall total of 55.966 points earned her a place in Thursday’s all-around final, trailing behind Biles and defending champion Sunisa Lee.
The young gymnast’s journey to represent Algeria began just last year following a dispute with the French gymnastics federation. Nemour expressed surprise and delight at the warm reception she received in Paris, acknowledging the pressure but maintaining a positive outlook on her performance.
“It’s good, but could be better,” Nemour said, demonstrating her drive for perfection. “There is still a week before the final, and I still have room to improve.”
As Nemour prepares for the finals, she carries the hopes of becoming Algeria’s first-ever Olympic medalist in gymnastics. Her rise to prominence in this competition marks a significant moment for African gymnastics on the global stage and sets the stage for an exciting showdown in the upcoming finals.
